Corrin Court Turns 20!

Apr 24, 2023

Corrin Court Turns 20 min

Sight Matters is incredibly lucky to call Corrin Court home.

The purpose-built premises, situated in Onchan, was designed and built to meet the needs of the island’s blind and visually impaired community and, as such, is fully accessible, safe and navigable. The project was supported by a variety of local donors, including very generous contributions from the Lowe family and the May family.

Over the last 20 years, Corrin Court has seen many changes, including three CEOs, two Chairmen, a new name (and corresponding signage!) and the development of Sight Matters’ recreation area and garden, The Freedom Field.

During this time, it has also housed numerous local charities when they’ve required office space, as well as hosted countless fundraising and community events (everything from coffee mornings and choir practices to murder mysteries and circus skills workshops). It's even used as a polling station.

Under "The Blind Persons Welfare Act 1937", Tynwald mandated that a society must exist to “promote [the] welfare of Manx blind persons”. Since then, Sight Matters – a trading arm of Manx Blind Welfare Society – has carried out that work.

Having our own premises has made doing this important work far easier, equipping us with a space where we can meet our members’ various needs – whether that’s access to life-changing technology and resources, social inclusion and emotional support services, training and education, or just a cuppa and a chat.

Though the building has seen many changes, one thing has remained constant throughout it all – Sight Matters’ commitment to those experiencing sight loss.

So here’s to another 20 years and beyond!
